Safari Prep List
Start a
weight loss and fitness program if necessary.
Depending on what species you are hunting you
may encounter several miles a day of walking on
uneven terrain. This is especially true with
elephant.
If you plan on purchasing a new
firearm for your African Safari, do it early so
you can get accustomed to the rifle. This also
gives you time to get the scope you want to use
as well as trying several loads to see what
shoots best in your rifle
Get a good supply of
ammunition of the type you will be using in
Africa for shooting practice. Different brands
of ammo, bullets etc. shoot differently in the
same firearm.
Make sure you have a sturdy
gun case suitable for the airlines. A two gun
case is not a bad idea even if only taking one
gun. The extra room can be used for extra scope,
cleaning materials, binoculars etc.
Purchase gun floaters
insurance, medical evacuation insurance as well
as trip cancellation insurance if desired. These
can all be purchased for a relatively low price
and become invaluable if the need arises to use
any of them.
Check to make sure your
passport is up to date. Most countries will want
your passport expiration date to be six months
beyond your scheduled date of departure from the
country you are visiting. If you need a VISA for
the country you are hunting in be sure to start
this process early.
Make sure you have all the
makes, models, calibers and serial numbers of
the firearms you intend to travel with. Secure
your Customs forms #4457 as well as required
firearms permits from the country you will be
visiting. If you are using a firearm importation
service you will need to send all this
information to them at least a month in advance
of your departure.
Make your flight reservations.
These are long flights so try to book early in
order to get isle and or exit seating. This can
make your flight a little more comfortable. If
travelling through Europe you may need
additional paperwork while travelling with
firearms.
If you need to overnight
before or after the safari make sure to book a
room for this purpose. We typically use the
Afton House in Johannesburg for this purpose and
happily make these arrangements for you.
Farren Safaris is here to
assist you with all of the above items so don't
be shy about asking.
