Eco-Hunts
We take a lot of pride in the fact
that we were one of the earlier companies to offer Eco or Green
Hunts for Rhino.
These hunts have now been extended to include buffalo and
elephant.
For those new to eco-hunting let
me explain how it works.
The conservation and wildlife departments in Africa are
continually in the process of darting Rhino and elephant in
order to take blood samples and tag them for monitoring,
movement etc. We have been offering, for over five years now,
the opportunity to participate in one of these dartings.
Safari Club International
recognizes darted game towards their awards programs and we have
had our clients dart rhino in order to complete thier “Big
Five”.
The hunts are generally shorter in duration than a typical hunt,
five to eight days for rhino. You spend the first several hours
of the trip practicing with the dart gun and being briefed by
the veterinarian on the proper care of the rhino while it is
"under". Due to the ballistics of the dart gun you have to be
within about fifteen to twenty yards of the animal before
shooting. Once you have successfully darted the animal you have
to stay out of its way for a few minutes while the anesthetic
takes effect. Our returning clients have indicated that this can
be more exciting than a rifle hunt. Once the animal is out the
biologists go to work doing their thing while you get your
pictures and take all necessary measurements for the
taxidermists. After an hour or so the animal is up on his feet
and away not to be darted again for several years.
The taxidermy procedure is
similar to what has been used for marlin and sailfish for
several years. The pictures and measurements are provided to the
taxidermists and a fiberglass duplicate is then made. These
hunts are generally conducted in the Northern Province of South
Africa.
